Christmas /Birthday
I am one of those fortunate/unfortunate ones who has a birthday close to Christmas. For the most part it was kinda drag. It was hard to have birthday parties because it was so close to Christmas. Sometimes you would get the "combined" gift ('here's your birthday and Xmas gift!'). There was occasion when it worked to my advantage. Like in 1974 (75?). For a couple of years I had put a brochure on my dads dresser of a Yamaha 80 I wanted. I made it very clear that if they got me this for Christmas, it was totally OK to make it a birthday/Christmas gift! Heck... I think I even mentioned it could apply to next years gifts as well.
I still can remember that feeling one Christmas. All the gifts had been opened and... no Yamaha. My dad asked me to go into the den and grab something he needed. I remembering being mildly disappointed there was no Yamaha this year, and slowly walked over to the Den to grab whatever it was for my dad. And there it was! It looked brand new although the headlight was broken from when my dad had pulled it out of his station wagon. I was star struck. Numb. My first real motorcycle! Heck this thing was even street legal!
I seem to remember it snowed that Christmas. I had never used a clutch before so learning in the snow was hard but I was determined. We had family coming over so I couldn't ride it much that day, but the next day was spent cruising the back alleys of my neighbourhood on that GT80. I probably slept beside that bike that night.

Christmas Gift?
The 1976 Harley-Davidson XL 1000 was customized by none other than Bud Ekins specifically for the Hollywood movie in which Knievel played himself fighting Mexican drug dealers. Owned by Warner Brothers, the motorcycle was purchased from the studio after filming by Los Angeles-area Harley dealer Dick Hutchins and has been displayed ever since.
This bike also recently appeared on eBay for sale!

Sears Christmas Catalogue
NOTHING said christmas to me than the arrival of the Sears Christmas Catalogue.
In some ways is was even better than Christmas!
All the possibilities. Things I didn't even know I wanted.
Hours upon hours going through and circling, checking, starring, highlighting,
emphasizing, prioritizing, thumb-nailing...
The best of Christmas memories was lying in bed thumbing thru these catalogues
dreaming of the endless possibilities.

We Love Nardwuar
It came to our attention last night that our good friend Nardwuar the Human Serviette suffered a stroke and is in the hospital recuperating. Sounds like it wasn't a serious one, but any stroke is serious enough to cause concern.
Nardwuars band, Thee Evaporators, has been an integral part in my kids rock and roll schooling. For all 4, Thee Evaporators were their first live rock and roll experience. And, it doesnt get much better than a live Evaporators show!
Two of my kids have been in Evaporator videos.
I spent years sharing the airwaves with Nard on CiTR radio (101.9 FM Vancouver). Helped Nard with many of his releases and gig posters. Heck, I still blame him for putting a stop to me buying the famous Evaporators Dune Buggy (He felt it necessary for it to stay in the "family")
Get well Nardwuar! It has come to my attention that the newest member of our family has never seen you live... this MUST change!

Photos
Nothing I love more than old polaroids/photos from those great custom bike shows of yesteryear.
When I was a kid, those shows were the highlight of the year, bypassed only by the
yearly arrival of the Sear Xmas Catalogue.
